Just a heads up that I’ve had another piece published, regarding racism in the AFL. You might recall I wrote about footballer Adam Goodes earlier in the year – how his unapologetic stance against outrageous racism from fans and players cost him his position in the AFL. Another player, Héritier Lumumba, has recently had his career cut short by similar racial abuse. The fact that he stood up against racial slurs, sexism and homophobia in the sport made him a prime target for those who believe minority groups should be seen and not heard.

Well said. Seen from afar it’s shocking, yet it explains so much. I do struggle to understand why there seems to be so little interest in changing, though. I had no idea you don’t have a treaty with your First Nations, and that you’re the only commonwealth country who doesn’t.

I read once that Australia’s racism, in particularly towards its First Nations peoples and refugees, is our national blind spot – so many Australians refuse to acknowledge it, but from the outside it seems obvious and horrific. Sort of like the US relationship to guns.

Thank You for sharing this. As a mom of 21 children, (ages 10 to 41 yrs old) Who happen to be Black, Mixed race, Asian, Latino and white. This is repulsive. Sadly there is no escape. Many of my white children have disabilities and the things people say about them in front of them is shocking as well. I’m sad to see your beautiful Country suffers this too. You write beautifully!

Thank you Eliz! I’m sad to hear that your beautiful children have to experience racism or ableism, and that you as a parent have to see it. Let’s hope one day these things will be a terrible relic of the past.

Well said. Unfortunately sometimes the people that speak up in Australia with important issues are then shot back down. We really need to start supporting people in the minority groups who experience racism, discrimination and other forms of abuse. Sport was not created to be a negative and unhealthy environment. Australia needs to wake up on this issue!

I wholeheartedly agree, Louis. If leaders and players in the sporting communities could take a no tolerance stance on racism, they could really change the culture of racism in Australian society. Best of luck with your campaign to eradicate racism from Aussie sports.
