Merino February Hat

This was an interim knit, made in April while deciding which jumper to knit this winter. And what better interim knit than a hat? I’ve made plenty of berets, cloches and caps before (see my Hats tag or Ravelry projects page for more), but my hat wardrobe was conspicuously lacking in beanies. So I turned to Kelbourne Woolens’ free hat pattern, the February Hat.

Worn with my Rockcliffe Scarf, Blank Canvas Jumper and Grainline Archer shirt.

Cable splay

I’m no knitting mastermind, but I do feel I have a solid grasp of the craft, moreso than sewing. I’ve been knitting since I was 14 years old, and am confident that I can interpret most patterns in a way that suits me. So when I come across a knitting conundrum I’m always eager to learn more.

How to choose colours for fair isle (when you know nothing about colour theory)

When I shared my Pyukkleen cowl with you last week, I mentioned I’d do a separate post on choosing colours cos it was a PROCESS. So here I am, about to give you terrible advice for choosing colours when I have zero understanding of colour theory.

A woman stands in front of a garage door. She wears a handknitted, fair isle cowl and handknitted brown jumper.

Pyukkleen

It’s winter here, which means I have a shit ton of hand knits to share with you. My latest creation is the Pyukkleen cowl, from Ysolda Teague’s Knitworthy. I’ve knitted so many garments from Knitworthy now that it has its own tag, and Ysolda patterns make up the bulk of my knitted projects. What can I say, I know what I like. New Strokkur

It was only a few weeks ago that I shared my Strokkur jumper with you….and now I have another one! You might recall that although I loved the fit and design of the Strokkur jumper, the Lopi yarn I knitted it with was just too scratchy for my liking. So I sold that one, and promptly knitted another.

A woman stands in front of a garden fence. She wears a yellow and grey colourwork yoke Icelandic jumper, blue jeans and brown suede boots.

Winter knitting plans

Now that winter has well and truly arrived, I’m enjoying being snuggled up inside with my knitting. I’ve already shared some garments I knitted last year (Bronwyn and Strokkur), so here are my knitting plans for this winter.

INSULATE! Hat

One thing I love about the knitting community is how its members unabashedly embrace pop culture. Ravelry forum groups, designs and challenges revolve around Harry Potter, Star Trek and Totoro. And of course, there are a pleasing number of designs in tribute to my favourite TV show, Doctor Who.

The motifs on this hat were really hard to photograph, especially by myself, so bear with me.

Armande Cardigan

Way back in summer 2016 I set myself the goal of knitting a few basic, wearable jumpers for the following winter. My first was the Merino Blank Canvas Jumper, and this is the second: Andi Satterlund’s Armande cardigan, free from Knitty, worked in Knit Picks Wool of the Andes Superwash.

How to knit a garment in both directions

Woman stands in garden. She wears a handknit grey jumper over a denim shirt.

When I did my write up on my Merino Blank Canvas jumper, I mentioned that I had knit it both top-down and bottom-up, by casting on in the middle of the project. Here’s how to do it. Continue reading “How to knit a garment in both directions”

Merino Blank Canvas Jumper

This post has been a long time coming. I started this project in August 2016, and completed it in November of the same year, or May 2017 depending on how you figure it. So a blog post is well overdue!

Woman stands in garden archway. She wears a grey handknit jumper, denim shirt, red jeans and ankle boots.
I call this: what am I doing with my head? Sussan denim shirt, Country Road jeans and Diana Ferrari boots from op shop.
